Human BehaviorHe walked over the kitchen floor in his boots, their flattened soles hard against the linoleum. His footsteps eased toward the microwave. I listened as he slammed the heavy plastic door over his television dinner, the machine running loudly as he paced back into the living room and fell between the arms of his couch. He kicked his boots from his feet, letting them plunge with heavy thumps against the floor. I watched above me as the ceiling shook. He did it deliberately, the noise. Night Shift on October 31stHe was sitting alone at one of the booths located in the center of the room. He was looking over the menu, his eyes scanning briefly over the bold prices before he shook his head and turned the page. I guessed he was around twenty. He could have been younger; he had a smooth face, a strong jaw line, shiny hair like he showered every morning. He didn’t have a jacket, just his shirt and his bare arms. It was always cold on the last night of October; I wasn’t sure what was wrong with him, why his arms seemed so unbothered after he’d been walking around outside.Night Shift on October 31st
